1Product Activation denies your rights as a consumerDec 31, 2002

All the TurboTax products for 2002 require product activation to lock that license to a single PC. Their license agreement also states that they may discontinue any aspect of the service at any time. This draconian measure may stop a few people from sharing their license with family members - but it will also prevent legitimate users from accessing their data. If you use TurboTax, and then get audited within 7 years, you probably won't be able to reprint or modify your tax return - since it is likely that you'll be using a different PC by that time. You won't be able to activate TurboTax on the new PC without repurchasing the software.

Historically, copy protection schemes have caused more problems for legitimate users than for pirates. Consumers need to stand up for their rights and refuse to purchase software with Product Activation.

1Avoid this program like the plagueJan 08, 2003

I can only echo what other reviewers have said. The program has glitches. The copy protection is so draconian that it will cause problems down the road. Do yourself a favor and buy a different, more user friendly product.

1TurboTax does not work. Intuit does not know why.Jan 09, 2003

TurboTax will not load on many computers according to Intuit. An error code appears when trying to get an activation code or the request code is missing during their new activation process. When you call their support line they say they do not have a fix for the problem and do not plan on having it fixed until February. The customer can not load the software. Good job Inuit. Greed has gone to your head and now you've created a product that doesn't work. Our advice to Intuit customers, if you want to spend your money on a product that just does not work then feel free. Otherwise save your money.

5Product Activation is a bad ideaJan 07, 2003

There is only one thing more private than doing ones taxes
and that takes place in the bedroom.
I have been a customer for 10 years and I will not being buying this
product now nor in the future because of your product activation scheme.
As a 30 year programmer analyst I consider this idea someone sold you a stupid idea.
This is a shame because I always considered TurboTax as a very well written and
user friendly application.
Now you have added another step to the installation process either requiring
a phone call which passes caller ID information or via the internet which will stamp the request with
Both a MAC ID and IP address if static, both which are user identifiable....
And what of the last minute tax filers who purchase the software
and start at the last minute and customer service possibly becomes overloaded OR the online activation possibly bogs down...
I cant imagine how many dissatisfied customers you will create if either of these conditions happen.
dumb dumb dumb.
These are two realistic possible points of failure of losing customers that didnt exist before.
Doing taxes is tedious and worrisome to begin with now you add to that burden.

In the era of heighten citizen concern about privacy your timing is
impeccably incorrect to alleviate customer concerns.
I suggest removing the product activation scheme or possibly risk losing more customers.
The only activation that should be going on is a few more neurons need to be firing between the ears of all who approved this scheme.

1Used to use Turbo-Tax, but now it's too DangerousJan 07, 2003

I've been using Turbo-Tax Home & Business in the past,
but changes to the program for 2002 render it too
dangerous to continue its use for myself and most
others.

If you ever need to file an amended return and you've
put in a new hard drive or replaced your computer, you
can't do it. They now require on-line or telephone activation
and the activation is locked to the PC it's installed on.

I routinely need to do amended returns a year or two down
the road, and it is entirely possible that I will have
changed computers by then.

Intuit will get no more of my money. I'm switching from
Turbo-Tax to Kiplinger's Tax Cut, and from Quicken to
Microsoft Money.
